We would generally recommend that you avoid splicing steel beams in the centre of the span where the stresses tend to be the greatest and instead provide two offset splices at 1/3rd and 2/3rds of the beam span where the bending moment is not as great as it would be in the centre of the beam. This keeps the splice connection design detail and fabrication cost to a minimum, saving you money.
We can provide you with full moment splices or cover plate splices or if the beam is relatively lightly loaded we can provide you with bolted end plate splices. However, the final splice connection we design will be governed by the loading acting upon the beam and the section size of the beam amongst other factors.
